A Game of Scales

dude

Just when I thought the scale and I were becoming friends, I got played once again!  In all honesty, I haven’t dedicated myself to any particular eating plan, but I have made improvements in many areas and feel great.  However, when I stepped on the scale this morning in the doctor’s office, there was an 8 pound weight gain difference compared to my scale at home.  Oddly, I had just weighed myself the day before and was happy with my 172 pound status.  But 180 pounds? Seriously?

180

After the nurse checked my vitals and weight in Exam Room 1, I was asked to step into Room 2 to meet with the doctor.  While waiting I decided to step on the scale in there also just to make sure I wasn’t losing my mind.  Again, the scale read 180 pounds.  WHAT? I wanted to drop to the floor, kicking and screaming.  What is going on here?  Surely there is a logical explanation.  Ok, so I’m wearing jeans, t-shirt, undies, a Fitbit, and moccasins.  My gear HAS to weigh 6 pounds, right? When I get home I jump on my digital scale which gives me a different number than our old school manual scale.  Four weigh-ins in one day…………….I’M DONE!  I’ve worked so hard to get the numbers to fall in the right direction and now I’m just freakin’ confused.  From now on, I’m not focusing on weight loss goals, but fitness and nutrition ones.  Screw the scale!

My main fitness goal right now is to finish Insanity by my 30th birthday and maldita sea, that’s what I’m going to do.

On a more awesome side of things, my doctor was amazed by my Insanity abs.  They’re not quite visible yet, but they’re there.  Waiting to meet the world.

  1. I’ve been trying to change my goals also, from “number on the scale” to fitness goals. I think my scale at home reads a lot lower than other scales so I know that feeling of being like wtf?! But anyways, Yay for you, you got this!!!

    • The good news is that I’m seeing results in other areas and losing inches, but man this whole scale thing is crazy. I don’t want to stress over it, but focus on getting healthier and having more energy instead. You hang in there. I think we’re going to be ok………Healthy Journey!

  2. OK, let’s back up a bit here, your Dr was impressed by your abs! Congrats!
As for the scale, depending on the time of the day and what you are wearing, it changes
If you still want to weigh yourself, use the same scale at the same time of the day.
And you’re right, focus on fitness and how you feel, your clothes fit etc

    • That was my thinking too, but I wasn’t for sure if it would change by that much just because I was wearing clothes. I suppose, but it’s still unhealthy to stress about the numbers on the scale. I just want to be healthy.

  3. Beautiful post and so true. My wife gets insomnia when she see that her weight has increased by a single pound. I wonder what will happen to her when she reads this post.

  4. I think you should go with measurements…lean muscle will weigh more than fat anyway. So I wouldn’t stress too much 🙂 If you focus on other things you will lose the weight without even knowing it too. Oh and I love that quote!!! I heard it years ago.
